The arrest of John Allen Muhammad:
He was known as the "Beltway Sniper" and he kept people living near the U.S capital in a state of terror during his 2002 killing spree, in which ten people died at his hands.
Born John Allen Williams, he was a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and joined the Nation of Islam in 1987. That's when he changed his last name to Muhammad.
Teaming up with 17 year old Lee Boyd Malvo…
…they took part in a series of random shootings…
…in various neighborhoods in the nation's capital and in Maryland and Virginia, near Washington D.C.
The shooting victims ranged in age from 13 to 72 and these ten people died.
However, thanks to tips from alert citizens. Malvo and Muhammad were tracked down and arrested. At the trial, a prosecutor said Muhammad did it as part to kill his ex-wife and get his children back. However, the judge said there was insufficient evidence to support the argument and Muhammad offered no explanation or motive.
Found guilty of capital murder he was sentenced to death…
…and Muhammad was executed by lethal injection at Virginia's Greenville Correctional Center on November 10, 2009.
His body was cremated and the ashes were given to his son.
Malvo, who confessed, got life imprisonment, because he was a teenager when the attacks occurred.
