The arrest of Charles Manson:
He was a bastard in every sense of the word. Born to an unmarried 16 year old named Kathleen Maddox, he might have never known his biological father, Walker Scott. He got his last name from William Manson, who his mother married after he was born.
His childhood was a train wreck, with his mother and her brother imprisoned for a gas station robbery while he was placed in a school for boys. When he ran from there to his mom, she rejected him.
He graduated from petty burglaries to robberies and assaults. He was even married for a while, supporting his wife with small jobs and stealing cars. They had a son, Charles Junior.
Now let's fast forward to the summer of 1969. His "family" of wayward youths, most of them girls…
…committed the brutal murders of Sharon Tate, Abigail Folger and several others.
One of his followers testified that he planned additional brutal slayings of several celebrities. He thought it would inspire a race war, Helter Skelter, which would propel him to power.
Here's Manson in a rambling interview he granted to MSNBC and unidentified broadcast outlets.
Manson also fancied himself a song writer and tried to use his relationship with Beach Boy's drummer Dennis Wilson to advance his musical career. Various musicians later covered some Charles Manson songs including Guns 'N Roses, Marilyn Manson and White Zombie.
Originally sentenced to death, his punishment was automatically changed to life imprisonment when California eliminated the state's death penalty. His parole requests repeatedly denied…Manson is incarcerated at California's Corcoran State Prison.
Manson's crew of killers was also convicted and they are also serving life sentences for their crimes.
And in a separate case, another of Manson's followers, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme is doing a life sentence of her own for a 1975 assassination attempt on then President Gerald Ford.
Here we go through the years in photos of one of the most notorious criminal masterminds in American history…
In November, 2014, Manson obtained a marriage license, and announced his plan to marry Afton Elaine Burton.
The bride-to-be had left her Midwestern home and spent the previous nine years trying to help exonerate him.
No date was set, but the prison assigned a wedding coordinator to handle the event and the couple has until the following February to get hitched, before being required to reapply for another license. If they marry, they'd be allowed to invite ten, non-inmate guests.
26 year old Afton claims she loves the 80 year old, notorious mass killer. However, as a life prisoner with no parole date, Manson is not entitled to family visits, another way of saying conjugal visits.
But it never came to pass, in yet another twisted twist in Manson's life. The marriage license expired on February 6, 2015. And it turns out the bride-to-be loved money more than Charlie.
A new book claimed she wanted to marry him to cash in on his corpse. She planned to make money by gaining possession of his remains upon his death and then putting his body on public display after his death.
The ghoulish couple cooked up the scheme months before thinking Manson's bizarre tomb would make big money, drawing huge crowds who would pay for a peek.
