The arrest of Tony LaRussa:
He's in baseball's Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a manager.
As skipper of three major league teams – the Chicago White Sox…
…Oakland A's…
…and St. Louis Cardinals…
Anthony "Tony" LaRussa led three teams to World Series championships…
…six league championships and a dozen division titles.
And his 2728 career victories put him third in baseball history, behind legends like Connie Mack and John McGraw.
His success as a manager followed a less than stellar career as a light hitting infielder for the A's, Braves and Cubs.
Tony also gained a law degree from Florida State University and is credited for ushering in the modern, specialized bull pen.
But for all his smarts on and off the field, LaRussa was caught in one very embarrassing incident, when he was arrested after falling asleep at the wheel of his SUV at a stop light in Jupiter, Florida during 2007 spring training. Two breath samples showed he was drunk.
Booked at the Palm Beach County jail, LaRussa was released after posting a $500 cash bond.
LaRussa called his spring training arrest an embarrassment and said he regretted it and took responsibility for it. He also apologized to anyone close to him and the Cardinals' organization. The Cardinals said that while they take such matters seriously and also apologized; it added that it was sticking with Tony.
LaRussa retired from his job as Cards' manager in 2011 after his team won the World Seers and was inducted in the baseball hall of Fame in the summer of 2014.
And the Cardinals retired his uniform number 10.
