The arrest of Mercury Morris:
He was so quick; they nicknamed him "Mercury". A star running back for the Miami Dolphins, Eugene Edward Morris played on three Super Bowl teams, winning twice in Super Bowls VII and VIII.
But after his playing days ended, he could not outrun the law.
He was born in Pittsburgh and played his college ball at West Texas State University, now known as West Texas A&M.
In 1967, he finished second in rushing yardage to the legendary O.J. Simpson, who later had his own notable legal problems.
Morris ended his football career with the San Diego Chargers in 1976, due to the after effects of earlier injuries. He was back in the news in 1982 when he was convicted of cocaine trafficking. He was sentenced to twenty years in prison, with a minimum of 15 years.
But the conviction was overturned and he was granted a new trial, over the issue of the handling of his entrapment defense. He was then allowed to plea bargain and was released from prison in May, 1986 after serving three years.
He later went on to a new career as a motivational speaker.
