The arrest of Marion Jones:
When most people hear the phrase "BALCO Scandal", they think of the legendary Major League baseball players whose reputations were shredded, and their Hall of Fame Eligibility brought into question. Men like Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Alex Rodriguez.
But in this case, it's a woman whose athletic reputation was tarnished. Marion Jones-Thomson, a native of Los Angeles, is a former world champion track and field athlete.
A citizen of the United States and Belize (where her mother comes from), Jones won five medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
…but was forced to forfeit all of her medals.
That's because in October 2007, she confessed to taking performance enhancing drugs.
She admitted lying to federal agents under oath about her use of steroids before the 2000 Summer Olympics and pleaded guilty in New York Federal Court.
She was forced to surrender both her U.S and Belizean passports and although she could have received a maximum prison sentence of five years, prosecutors recommended no more than six months as part of her plea deal.
Jones was later stripped of her medals, although she told Oprah Winfrey in an interview she could have won those medals at the Sydney Olympics without the drugs that led to her downfall.
Jones was sentenced to six months in jail in January 2008 because of her use of performance enhancing drugs and involvement in a check fraud case. She entered the Federal Medical Center, Carswell Prison in Fort Worth, Texas on March 7th of that year.
…and was released on September 5th.
