But his reputation was smeared in 2003 when he was charged with sexual assault…
…after having relations with a 19 year old hotel employee in Edwards, Colorado.
Kobe, who married Vanessa Laine in 1999,
…admitted to an adulterous affair but denied the sex assault accusation.
The case was dropped in September, 2004 …
…when Kobe's accuser refused to testify against him.
A civil suit was later settled out of court and the settlement terms were not disclosed. Kobe's endorsement contracts with McDonald's and Nutella were terminated because of the negative publicity.
In December 2011, Vanessa filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences while the couple maintained joint custody of their two daughters. And in January 2013, Kobe and Vanessa announced on social media they had called off the divorce.
In the meantime, Kobe continued his high-flying NBA career.
