The arrests of Don King:
When most people hear his name, they think this:
What many don't know is, there's a lot of this…
…in his past.
Donald King was born in Cleveland, dropped out of Kent State University and ran an illegal bookmaking operation. King came into the public eye by the mid 1970's when he promoted the "Rumble in the Jungle" bout in Zaire, between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
It was a huge television event and it launch King's career as a boxing promoter.
He was also behind fights by Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, and Evander Holyfield.
But a number of boxers, including Tyson…
…felt defrauded by King and they sued him. Tyson tried for 100-million dollars and settled for 14-million.
Prior to his time as a boxing promoter, King did have problems with the law. Between 1954 and 1966 he was arrested on suspicion of murder and arson, suspicion of drug dealing, carrying a concealed weapon and manslaughter.
He was charged with killing two men in incidents thirteen years apart. The first turned out to be justifiable, as self-defense was successfully claimed.
But King was convicted in the case of stomping death of employees named Sam Garrett, who owed him 600 bucks, in 1966. A judge reduced the conviction to non-negligent manslaughter and King serves 3 1/2 years of a 15 year sentence.
