The arrest of Aaron Hernandez:
Aaron Michael Hernandez's promising career in the National Football League, and perhaps his life itself, all came to a screeching halt when he was jailed and accused of murdering Odin Lloyd…
…a semi pro football player.
An All-American at the University of Florida, where he was a member of a BCS national championship team…
…Hernandez was selected by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL draft…
He quickly rose to stardom…
…and was selected for the Pro Bowl, which is the NFL's All-Star game, followed his second year in the league.
He did have previous brushes with the law, including a 2007 bar fight in Gainesville Florida, in which prosecution was deferred.
Taking selfies with a pistol never helps.
On June 26, 2013, officers from North Attleboro, Massachusetts and the Massachusetts State police arrested him at his home.
And it really all came crashing down around him on August 22, 2013 when he was indicted for murder in the Odin Lloyd case.
Hernandez claims he's innocent, but the Patriots' released him shortly after his arrest.
Aaron Hernandez is currently being held without bail at the Bristol County Jail and the murder charges in the Odin Lloyd case have yet to be determined.
Hernandez's situation deteriorated in the spring of 2014. Since 2012, law enforcement officials were investigating Aaron for a double homicide in Boston when two men were shot and killed in their car.
An indictment was handed up on May 15, 2014, charging Aaron with shooting and killing two Cape Verdean immigrants. 28 year old Daniel Abreu and 29 year old Safiro Hurtado had what the indictment called a "chance encounter" with the football star.
The details of their meeting were not revealed but Hernandez is accused of shooting them and killing them while they waited at a traffic light after leaving a nightclub.
However, before that case even went to trial, Aaron Hernandez learned that his old football jersey #81 was going to be traded in for a much longer prison inmate number. On April 15, 2015, Hernandez was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole.
That sentence automatically triggered an appeal to Massachusetts' highest court.
The motive for the crime was never made clear, but it didn't need to be for a conviction to be handed down. Prosecutors suggested Lloyd may have been killed because he knew too much about the 2012 drive by killings of Abreu and Hurtado.
Hernandez lawyers conceded he was present when Lloyd was killed; although they maintained the two men who were with him, Ernest Wallace and Carlos Ortiz did the shooting. Their trial was still pending. Prosecutors said the ex-NFL star pulled the trigger.
And so, 25 year old Aaron Hernandez, who had a $40 million dollar contract to play pro football, was led away to begin serving his time.
