The arrest of Paul Reubens:
It's probably the last place you'd think to look for the host of a popular kids' TV show.
But Paul Reubens, born Paul Rubenfeld but known to the world as Pee Wee Herman…
.....was caught pleasuring himself in a dark Florida movie theatre.
He hit it big with his Pee Wee persona thanks to a show that he developed in 1982, highlighted by a popular special on HBO.
That led to his feature film debut in 1985 in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure."
A 1988 sequel called "Big Top Pee Wee" wasn't as big a hit, but by that time, he was hosting a Saturday morning kid's show on CBS-TV…"Pee Wee's Playhouse."
It ran from 1986 to 1991, and then he decided to take some time off from it. He let his hair grow long, sported a beard and his not-so-great adventure happened in July, 1991 in Sarasota, Florida while visiting relatives. He was caught masturbating by detectives in a porno movie theatre.
He tried to talk his way out of it by offering to do a children's benefit show. But his name was picked up by a newspaper reporter and his secret was out. Reubens' plea bargained his way to 75 hours of community service, making anti-drug ads.
After his arrest, which sparked outcry and ridicule, CBS stopped playing reruns of his Saturday show. He made a comeback at the 1991 TV music video awards but Pee Wee laid low for much of the '90's, although Paul did score a recurring role on Murphy Brown and went on to a dramatic role opposite Johnny Depp in "Blow" in 1999.
Pee Wee sprang back to life in 2010 on Broadway in "The Pee Wee Herman Show" and more projects are planned.
