The arrest of Jane Fonda:
She was definitely controversial, but a criminal? No way! Her mug shot is more like a hyped-up photo op.
The daughter of the famous film star Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda is a very successful actress in her own right. Her breakthrough role was in 1965's "Cat Ballou".
She also appeared in "Barefoot in the Park"…
…and turned a lot of heads in "Barbarella"…
Jane went on to win a Best Actress Oscar in 1971 for her lead role in "Klute"
She starred in 1978's "Coming Home" and won a second Best Actress Academy Award for that. She later co-starred with her father in "On Golden Pond". Henry Fonda won the Best Actor Oscar for his role and she accepted it for him, because he was too ill to attend and died a few months later.
But besides her acting, Jane was also a very controversial figure, well-known for her opposition to the Viet Nam war. She came under intense criticism for a visit to Hanoi, for which her detractors nicknamed her "Hanoi Jane"
Over the years, she also supported feminist and various Civil Rights causes.
And so, sporting the hairdo she wore in "Klute", Jane Fonda was arrested at a Cleveland Airport and accused of smuggling drugs.
The pills turned out to be vitamins and the charges were dropped.
Scoffing at the paranoia her political stances fired up, she later had a clutch bag emblazoned with her mug shot, and had a mug shot t-shirt made up.
